CFMOTO has given its new 526cc twin two quite different homes. The 550MT puts road travel first, with a 23-litre tank and a seat adjustable between 800 and 820mm. The 550MT-X has a slimmer rally-style body, a one-piece seat and longer suspension. The shared engine is the starting point; the wheels, ergonomics and equipment make the choice more interesting.
One engine, two equipment lists
Both claim 54hp (40kW) at 8,500rpm and 52Nm at 6,000rpm, with a bidirectional quickshifter as standard. The ordinary MT also offers an optional electronically controlled clutch. That gives the road bike another convenience feature alongside cruise control, without making it part of every 550's specification.
The MT runs 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, with fully adjustable KYB suspension. An 8-inch MMI 2.0 display supports Apple CarPlay, while Bluetooth and NFC provide keyless access. Its electronics include three riding modes, IMU-based cornering ABS and traction control, plus rear detection. These are substantial touring features for the smaller member of an adventure range.

What changes on the X
The X switches to 21/18-inch wheels and CST tyres. Fully adjustable KYB suspension gives 230mm of travel at the front and 220mm at the rear, with 250mm of ground clearance. The seat is 850mm high, or 830mm with the lower option. Those changes give it more clearance and room to move when standing, at the cost of the road bike's lower perch.

Its tank holds 16 litres. CFMOTO quotes 172kg dry and 183kg with fluids for the X; neither figure should be confused with a weight supplied for the ordinary MT. J.Juan brakes use 320mm front and 240mm rear discs. Off-Road mode allows rear ABS and traction control to be switched off, and the smaller 6.2-inch vertical screen uses MotoPlay.

Prices and arrival
US and French prices and dealer dates are still to come. CFMOTO says the French production specification may change, but the two bikes already have clear identities: the MT is the more accessible travel package, while the X puts its chassis choices towards unpaved riding.
US and European pricing is still to be confirmed.
