Triumph has put the Bonneville name on a new 400cc single. The T40 and T40 Black use a dedicated version of the TR-series engine, wrapped in a teardrop tank, spoked wheels and twin rear shocks. The aim is a smaller Bonneville with its own relaxed delivery, rather than simply restyling the Speed 400.
A different tune for the TR single
A revised cylinder head and engine tune bring peak torque of 36Nm at 5,000rpm and 31.6hp (23.5kW) at 7,000rpm. Those lower engine speeds suit the upright riding position and peashooter exhaust. Both models are A2-compliant as standard, with a power figure that puts accessible road riding ahead of a top-end contest.

Seat, wheels and everyday use
The wheels measure 18 inches at the front and 17 at the rear, using aluminium rims and steel spokes. Seat height is 790mm, with a low accessory seat reducing it to 770mm. Triumph quotes 191kg ready to ride. A centrestand is standard, which should make chain maintenance and upright storage easier.
Modern equipment behind the round clock
The electronics are surprisingly extensive for the format. Road, Rain and Eco modes are joined by two customisable settings, with cruise control and lean-sensitive ABS and traction control. A circular 4-inch TFT can show an analogue-style Heritage layout, or full-map navigation from Triumph's phone app. USB-C, backlit controls and LED lights are included too.

The distinction between the two versions is mainly finish. The T40 pairs bright metal with two-tone paint and hand-painted coach lines. The Black uses darker engine, exhaust and bodywork treatments, with gloss-black wheel rims. Both retain the bench seat, round headlight and traditional twin-shock outline.

Prices and arrival
Global arrivals are planned for late spring 2027. Triumph says pricing will be announced in early 2027, so confirmed US and EU amounts are still to come.
