SYM has brought a turbocharged maxi-scooter concept to EICMA. The MAXSYM TURBO pairs a 465cc parallel twin with a compact turbocharger and an intercooler, wrapped in angular grey bodywork with bright green details. The powertrain is the interesting part of the project, with the emphasis on torque arriving earlier in the rev range.
A turbo twin with a CVT
The liquid-cooled, DOHC eight-valve engine claims 52hp (39kW) at 6,500rpm and 58.9Nm at 5,500rpm. Drive passes through a CVT. SYM claims a 0–100km/h time below 5.7 seconds; that remains a manufacturer figure for a concept, rather than a result from our own testing.
Motorcycle-style engine mounting
The engine uses motorcycle-style mounting instead of moving with the rear wheel. An upside-down fork and a single-sided, multi-link rear suspension support the chassis. Twin 288mm front discs and a 275mm rear disc handle braking, with 15-inch tyres at both ends. The proposed seat is 790mm high and the tank holds 16 litres.
Ride-by-wire, cornering ABS and traction control, cruise control and an electric screen are part of the concept specification. A 7-inch TFT connects through the SYM+ app. These are the travel features that would make the turbo engine relevant beyond the headline acceleration claim.
Production plans
The MAXSYM TURBO remains a concept. Production timing and US or European prices have not been confirmed.
US and European pricing is still to be confirmed.
